Frequently asked questions

  • • Every HiPP finalist will have a detailed understanding of the field of science in their interest.

    • Students will have printed research boards that should be used at International, National, and Regional competitions (i.e., Regeneron Science Talent Search (STS) and Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) and their affiliated fairs).

    • Student finalists will learn research methods and presentation skills to be used at a final HiPP conference in June 2025. An all-expense trip to NY is included in the award package.

    • Student finalists will compete for cash prizes.

    • Every finalist student will receive and be allowed to keep a high-RAM processing computer for data science analysis, Zoom meetings, and presentation building. The computers are part of the prize package for each student. In addition, after the conference finalists, students will be awarded the following cash prizes (used for future high-stakes competition participation, as needed).

  • • Students will attend weekly research methods sessions with Dr. McCalla (approximately, 1.5 hours/week)

    • Students will work with research mentors (~1.5 hours/week) to bring a project idea from inception to completion.

    • Students will be expected to complete a research project and work additional hours in the summer (~20 hours/week) to complete their research investigations.

  • • Students will work with research mentors to clarify gaps in understanding and data analysis within their project.

    • Students will work learn skills to “sell” their project ideas to leaders in their field of interest.

    • Students may attempt to publish their findings with the support of the research mentor.

  • • Exams are not given, but reading scientific literature and understanding the scientific discipline of the student project is a mandatory component of great science research.

  • Yes, HiPP will be responsible for pairing the Top 10 finalists with mentors within scientific fields of their interest.

  • YES!!! This is the goal of the HiPP program. We would like all Top 10 participants to participate in local, regional, national, and international competitions.

  • YES! The Top 10 finalists will have ideas about a scientific question of interest. We hope to help young innovators and inventors build upon their projects and ideas.

    We will help them address scientific questions they have previously attempted to answer —> What do you want to know and what did you attempt to do to identify an answer?

  • Mentor and mentee matches will be content-specific. Participants will work with mentors who are interested in similar work.

  • Some teaching sessions can and will be recorded, for a limited time.

  • No, all nominations must come from an educator working at the student's school!
